Sage Agastya-The Mountain Bows

 

There were two Mountains, Mountain Vindhyachal and Mountain Meru. The Lord Surya Deva (Sun) used to go around Moutain Meru but not Mountain Vindhyachal. This made Mountain Vindhyachal jealous. He asked the Lord Surya deva (Sun) to encircle him but was refused. In anger, Mountain Vindhyachal grew and touched the sky. He blocked the Lord Surya deva (Sun). The earth was plunged in darkness. Without sunlight, creatures started to die. The gods went to Sage Agastya for help. Sage Agastya promised to help. Mountain Vindhyachal knew he could not defeat Sage Agastya and so he decided to please him, he bowed his head in respect and invited him to stay. Sage Agastya said, "I have to go for some important work. Stay in this position till I return." mountain Vindhyachal realised his mistake, but he could not disobey a sage Agastya and stayed bowed. Sage Agastya never returned. Now the sun's rays reached the earth and all was well again.
